How to Approach Online Dating when Disabled
By Beth Moore
There are many things that can happen to you that can cause you to put your life on hold, but only if you choose to. Online dating sites offer people with limitations or disabilities the opportunity to get to know potential dating partners before having to deal with the logistics of their disabilities.

If you think that meeting people is hard when you are busy, try being disabled and busy. With mobility frequently an issue everything takes just a little more time, so an already impacted schedule is just that much harder to negotiate.

Online Dating Levels the Playing Field

Online dating sites offer the same services to special needs people as they do to regular people. On the human level special needs or not, people are people. Everyone is afraid of being rejected, and many people are shy about courting or dating. Add to that the special need, whatever it is, and you have just a bigger hurdle to overcome.

The online dating venue is excellent for catering to people who have some kind of special need. Some sites even cater directly to members who have a specific limitation like being wheelchair bound.

Many times relationships begin from online support groups that are aimed at creating a supportive community for advice and friendship. Other sites are full service, online dating sites.

Disabled people have the option of dating other disabled people, or they can troll the general population for a potential mate. Either way, it is nice to know that the option exists for a disabled person to find others who really understand what they go through every day.

Just because someone is disabled does not mean that they do not want full experiences from their lives, so having a comfortable dating website is important. Frequently, however, the membership on these websites is low, which makes them less effective than larger sites.

One way of dealing with small memberships is simply to join several sites. Finding the perfect mate is largely a numbers game, regardless of your physical limitations. So the more places you are available to be found, the more likely it is that someone will find you. And, the more places that you have to look, the more likely it is that you will find someone.

Rejection is an inevitable part of dating for everyone, so just assume that it will happen some time and move on the your next selection. The online dating scene can be a great equalizer for anyone with a disability, and if you find a real connection online, then you will both want to make it work in person. So go ahead, nothing ventured, nothing gained!
